New: In-Person Music Theory and Ear Training Classes for High School Students
 

Starting this fall, Juilliard Extension is excited to offer in-person Music Theory and Ear Training classes for high school students. In-person classes will be held on Sundays throughout the semester at Juilliard.
 

Spring 2025 Semester: January 25 – May 4, 2025

Juilliard Extension welcomes high school students worldwide to enroll in our college-level music theory and ear training classes. Our courses cater to students aged 14-18 and cover a broad range of topics, from fundamental concepts to advanced training. Our aim is to deepen students' musical skills and help them achieve proficiency in music.
 

Our music theory and ear training classes are both online and in-person. Students can expect additional coursework outside of class hours. We structure our classes to prepare students for Advanced Placement exams, and we offer select courses that qualify for college credit.
 

Our courses are designed to help students enhance their musical abilities, regardless of their current level. By enrolling in our music theory and ear training classes, students will be exposed to different styles of music, learn advanced techniques and approaches to music, and develop a strong foundation in musical concepts.

• Juilliard Extension welcomes all students aged 14-18 to apply for our music theory and ear training classes.
• Students may choose to enroll in a Music Theory class, an Ear Training class, or both. However, if you plan to take both courses simultaneously, please be aware that you must submit a separate application for each.
• Students who are currently enrolled in a Music Theory and/or Ear Training course and anticipate receiving a passing grade will receive a pre-approval letter before the start of the next semester. Current students do not need to complete an application. Please contact our office directly with any questions regarding your pre-approval status.
• The application deadline for the spring semester is Friday, January 10, 2025 at 5pm ET.
• Once a class placement has been determined for applicants, prospective students will receive a status update email. The placement letter will contain instructions on finalizing registration and submitting tuition.

January 25–May 4, 2025

High school students can attend online music theory and ear training classes. To be enrolled, students must fill out an online application form before the deadline on Friday, January 10 at 5pm ET.

For credit courses, attendance is mandatory for all class sessions. If a student is unable to attend, they must inform their instructor with as much notice as possible. In case of absence, students can access class recordings to make up any missed coursework.

For non-credit courses, attendance is encouraged but not mandatory. If a student misses a class, they can access the recording to catch up on their own time and keep pace with the course.

Elements of Music Theory and Analysis (EVDIV 011)

This course is appropriate for students who are in the early stages of learning music. In this online music theory class, students explore the elements of music and prepare for more advanced music theory studies. These include notation, symbols, solfège, clefs, key signatures, major and all three minor scales, modal scales, intervals, triads, and seventh chords as well as an introduction to four-part writing, analysis, and modulation. Students are introduced to the reading of simple scores and apply basic skills learned in class through discussion and analysis. This class requires outside preparation in the completion of weekly assignments in order for students to master the skills necessary to continue in the Music Theory and Analysis sequence.

This course is one semester in length. Students receiving a passing grade will progress to Music Theory and Analysis I.

This online music theory course provides an introduction to the theory and analysis of tonal music, and entering students are expected to be familiar with musical fundamentals. After a brief review to establish facility and speed in naming and spelling basic tonal materials, the course introduces species counterpoint, diatonic harmony, and the composition and analysis of musical phrases typical of the Baroque and Classical styles.

This course is one semester in length. Students receiving a passing grade will progress to Music Theory and Analysis II.

This online music theory class examines principles of formal structure from the smallest phrase units to complete movements in binary and da capo forms. These principles are explained through the analysis of examples drawn from music literature of the 18th and 19th centuries as well as through model-composition assignments.

This is a basic preliminary online ear training course for students who have had prior musical training but require an accelerated review of the elements of music before moving on to Ear Training I. In this highly interactive class, students will focus on building their aural skills by learning to produce and identify various musical elements by ear. The covered topics include fixed-do solfège, key signatures, clef reading, scale singing, interval singing, sight singing, rhythmic exercises, and melodic dictations. In addition to studying these topics during class, students will need to prepare for weekly performance-based recitations outside of class.

This course is one semester in length. Students receiving a passing grade will progress to Ear Training I (Part I).

Ear Training I introduces a variety of fundamental concepts while setting students on a path toward mastery of the skills required to achieve a high level of musicianship. The overarching goal of this highly interactive online course is to help students achieve a deep understanding of sound as it functions in music. Upon successful completion of parts I and II, students will be fluent in fixed-do solfège, the treble and bass clefs, all diatonic intervals and triads, and will be able to perform rhythms in a variety of meters and subdivisions. Students will also gain experience with sight singing and dictation. In addition to studying the covered topics during class, students will need to prepare for weekly performance-based recitations outside of class.

This course is presented in two parts. Each part is one semester in length. Students may enter Part I or II at any time based on placement applications.

Juilliard Extension Credits

Acceptance of credits earned in Juilliard Extension classes is at the complete discretion of the institution to which the student seeks to apply them. If credits earned in Juilliard Extension courses are not accepted at the institution to which the student seeks to apply them, the student may be required to repeat some or all of the course work at the institution. Students should ensure in advance that their Juilliard Extension course credits will be accepted by contacting the institution for confirmation.

Financial Aid

Juilliard Extension is a nonmatriculating, nondegree program within The Juilliard School. We do not offer scholarships or federal or state funding.

Payment Plans

Payment plans are offered on a case-by-case basis and at the sole discretion of the Juilliard Extension office. Please contact the Extension office to find out more about payment plan options at [email protected].

Withdrawals and Refunds

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must email [email protected]. No telephone requests for withdrawals will be accepted. Ceasing to attend a class or notifying the instructor does not constitute an official withdrawal. Cancellation of payment does not constitute withdrawal or reduce the financial obligations to Juilliard. A $25 fee will be charged for returned and stop-payment checks.

Withdrawal from class does not necessarily entitle a student to a refund or to a cancellation of tuition still due. Refunds are computed from the day on which written notice of withdrawal is received and are issued as follows:

100 percent tuition refunded
for withdrawals submitted prior to the first day of class

75 percent tuition refunded
for withdrawals submitted after the first class

50 percent tuition refunded
for withdrawals submitted after the second class

No refunds issued
for withdrawals after the third class

Grading

Students taking courses for credit will receive a final grade upon completion of the class. If they receive a passing grade, they will earn credits for the course. A transcript will become available with the student’s final grades once issued by the instructor. Transcripts are not available for noncredit courses. All courses will operate through Canvas, Juilliard’s Online Learning Management system. Canvas is where you will be able to access your course information, Zoom meetings (for online courses), handouts, assignments, and additional resources. Whether you are in-person or online, you will have access to and will likely need to use Canvas. 

To access Canvas, log into your Okta account. Your Okta account username is your primary email address. Once logged in, click the Canvas tile to automatically redirect into the platform. After entering Canvas, the courses in which you are enrolled will appear on the dashboard. Your courses will be published one week prior to the first class. Your instructors may contact you with more detailed information specific to your course(s) closer to the first sessions.
